Becki's StoryAs a little girl I always knew that I was special as my heart went tock tick and not tick tock or at least that's what I was told. Anyway, during my early school life I was the same as other children but from the age of ten I became a bit different, on a trip to a local hill with the sledge I became out of breath and collapsed going very blue so was rushed to hospital where it was discovered that I had aortic stenosis!, I had an angiogram and 6 weeks later was in Edinburghs childrens hospital having my own aortic valve made bigger, that made a huge difference until I had just finished my nurse training when on a boring night shift I took my own blood pressure, it was dangerously low so I went to see my GP who refered me straight to the local hospital where again in six weeks I was on the operating table having this time my valve replaced with a carbon fibre one, I recovered well and went on to (against medical advice) have 2 very healthy children and had good pregnancies both times carefully monitored as I was on waerfarin. 8 years ago the symptoms returned unfortunately, and this time it was made clear that it was very bad but I was lucky to get world famous Magdi Yacoub to operate on me very quickly in Londons Royal Brompton Hospital, he replaced my metal valve with a homograft which is tissue and I am now back at work even though I suffered a minor stroke during surgery and look forward to getting married next year to the nicest man in the world. Life is too short to worry about what we can't do it's time to always do what we can, I hope this is helpful. Kindest regards Becki Mackay You are here: Home >> Your Stories >> Becki's Story |
