Around the Bypass by Susan Reynolds

Around the Bypass is a poignant but humorous account of feelings of denial and desperation on a journey back to health after heart surgery.

To people awaiting heart surgery, the interim period can seem so lonely as to be unimaginable. In this intense and inspiring book, Susan Reynolds tells it how it is; a catalogue of emotions, from feelings of total panic to a morbid dwelling on dying. Any kind of cardiac surgery is intrusive and support is needed every step of the way, both beforehand and afterwards.

This book is a breakthrough because Susan Reynolds is not an onlooker but someone who has experienced heart surgery for herself and the highly charged emotions involved in undergoing such a serious procedure. Her recovery is painstakingly recorded in a diary she kept throughout this period. The humour in it is unintentional, and it is both poignant and honest. Although the author feels that it may come across as self-pitying, she includes it because it is more than ‘okay’ to feel any and every emotion after heart surgery – it is an absolute necessity for recovery.
