Jab Heals Heart - Stem Cell Miracle

Patients who needed heart transplants have been cured with a jab of their own stem cells, doctors revealed yesterday.

Four seriously ill patients were given the cells - which can transform themselves to any type of human tissue - after they were taken from their bone marrow.

Medics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, who carried out the pioneering surgery said the four had such a big improvement in blood supply they no longer needed transplants.

One heart surgeon said: "This is the most exciting development in 40 years"

The technique - known as "regenerative medicine" - could one day become commonplace for patients with damaged or diseased hearts, some doctors believe. But stem cell research is highly controversial as the most promising cells are taken from embryos, usually discarded by fertility clinics.
